Mac Mini (M1) needs a new cable or adapter to connect via KVM switch—here’s what you should consider.
Hey there! I'm working with an M1 Mac Mini in a KVM configuration connected to two Windows 11 machines and a Dell Thunderbolt dock. Everything seems to function properly. The Mac Mini, though, is having trouble disconnecting from the monitor I'm using through the KVM. I'll share the details below once I describe the problem. Issue: Monitor drops off no matter the resolution or settings on the Mac Mini. Mouse, keyboard, and audio work perfectly. Only the connection to the monitor fails. Additional info: The monitor is owned by my partner, so I can't replace it. Previously, the Mac Mini connected to an LG ultrawide via Thunderbolt without issues. It works fine with standard HDMI on compatible devices. This KVM only supports DisplayPort. The monitor has HDMI inputs but I'd like a solution that lets me switch between them easily—like using the same adapter for both. The Thunderbolt dock is meant for other devices and can't be dedicated to this Mac Mini. The Mac Mini is essential for my development tasks and can't just be skipped. Discussion: I've read on Reddit about avoiding HDMI adapters from the port and opting for USB-C to DisplayPort cables. That works for me, but I don’t want to keep swapping cables or risking returns. I need a reliable adapter that works with my existing KVM without constant disconnections. This is making it really frustrating.
To resolve the issue, experiment with various connection techniques. USB C DisplayPort mode (using a DP cable) is likely the most effective solution. If this doesn’t resolve it, the problem might lie with the KVM itself. Without purchasing new equipment, consider switching to another DP cable between the adapter and the KVM. Welcome to the forum!
