Someone with experience might explain what's happening with your system. You're using a 13900k with a Z790-E motherboard, and your GPU isn't running at 16x anymore despite being a 4TB M.2 Gen4 NVMe 1.8G SNACK STX. Many people have tried various solutions, but it seems the difference between 16x and 8x GPUs is minimal. Why not just use the extra 1-5% bandwidth when it could make a real difference? Your CPU has 16x Gen5 and 4x Gen4, yet the GPU still converts to 16x Gen5 and claims it can switch to 4x. I'm exhausted from searching online and feel like asking for help would be better.

I’ve tried it myself. I’m not sure if it’s really the best approach. Anyone else think there’s a better way? Or is this just what a $850 CPU can do?

Certain motherboards with an NVMe M.2 card in the 5.0 PCIe port can reduce the PCIe bandwidth for the GPU from x16 down to x8.

You seem uncertain about the situation. It’s unusual for such a task to require so many planes, and I doubt a z790-e would handle it. Could you clarify where you found the lane information?

It seems there could be a few interpretations. Are you referring to whether people might have an opinion based on the number of M.2 slots on a motherboard?

They recommended moving it to the second M.2 port, which might allow your GPU to utilize the 16x bandwidth.

It might be worth exploring further, though I think the chipset could be the reason. The M.2 slot likely uses its own dedicated lanes, separate from the x16 port. I’d consider verifying if your CPU cooler fits snugly and whether any PCIe connections are misaligned.
