I recently changed my laptop from an ASUS G752VY (i7 6700HQ, 16GB 2133MHz, GTX 980m 4GB) to an ASUS GL502VY (i7 7700HQ, 16GB 2666MHz, GTX 1070). The thermal performance is acceptable, and benchmarks show both GPUs can handle up to 110 watts without throttling. However, in GTA5 with identical settings, resolution, and driver version 366.36, my previous laptop runs much smoother, maintaining around 70fps consistently. See the attached photos...both taken after saving the same point and standing still facing the same direction. The old machine caps at about +61 fps and often drops to 40. Both laptops get enough power from the PSU (230W). I've tried reinstalling Windows, installing Windows 11, using older NVIDIA drivers, reinstalling the driver again, following NVIDIA recommendations, fullscreen mode, borderless window, windowed mode. I’m running out of ideas—please help.
V-Sync disabled with maximum performance settings applied, both in Windows and the Nvidia control panel.
Only the games listed are considered; does the 1070 mobile excel in different titles? In your screenshots, the 1070 mobile appears at 60% usage, likely constrained by a single-threaded CPU? Open the Task Manager to verify if any thread reaches 100%. Consider running a benchmark with identical settings and compare results. You can also use tools like 3Dmark or Passmark to test GPU performance.
It looks like the GPU performance is constrained by either the CPU load or frame rate limits. The difference between 980M and 1070M, as well as 6700 to 7700, doesn’t show significant improvement.
It works significantly better than the GTX 980m in titles such as Ready or Not and Cyberpunk. The score in 3D Mark jumps by around 3000 points. I don’t understand why earlier CPUs and GPUs would outperform them.
I discovered a fix for GTA5 using a different DirectX version. For users facing similar issues, I checked the gtav directory and found a text file containing only DirectX 10_1. By switching to DirectX 11, the problem was resolved. It seems DirectX 11 offers better performance, especially in menus.
