It's a technique for exchanging files on Windows using secure connections. Think of it as HTTPS adapted for a local network—no need to explain the details. It's essentially Samba with encryption, allowing two computers to share files safely through authentication. Not a standalone program, but a protocol for secure communication. CIFS serves as the standard method for Windows to connect over a local network.

You've faced a challenge before, but you're wondering if it will repeat. It sounds like you spent a long time trying to set up Samba and still couldn't locate your shares. Given the time you've invested, it's likely this issue will come up again. You might want to focus on finding a quicker solution instead of retrying the same steps.

Ubuntu/Linux setup can be unpredictable without proper knowledge or updated guides. FreeNAS simplifies the process by eliminating the need to install packages or use the command line. Just set up the preferences, launch the service, and distribute the drives. If you encounter problems, I'm available 24/7 (except for sleep). I’m familiar with FreeNAS configurations, so feel free to ask questions. For urgent situations, Amahi might be a better option—it prioritizes straightforward design.

I’m leaning toward Amahi. Keeping things straightforward fits the situation, and it’s something I appreciate. While I enjoy FreeNAS, my role involves managing file servers at work, which makes me appreciate its reliability and adaptability. It’s practical enough for small to medium setups but can become complex if you need more than basic functions. My interest in Amahi stems from its flexibility, especially as a trusted OS for both business and home use. It’s versatile, though it can be tricky to learn thoroughly. Personally, my preference doesn’t guarantee it’s ideal, so I’d start with Amahi and consider FreeNAS if needed. If that doesn’t suit, we can explore setup together—I’ll guide you through the basics.

I'll choose Amahi now. For the time being, I need to rest. Appreciate all the support.
