Looking to upgrade your wireless router?
I've owned an ASUS RT-N66U for quite some time and wondered if an upgrade would make sense. My main computer uses an Ethernet connection, while my phone, tablet, and laptops connect wirelessly. My internet speed is 500Mbps down and 10Mbps up. I don’t play intense online games; I mainly browse the web and watch YouTube videos. The ASUS RT-AC66U B1 seems affordable but looks almost identical to my current router, so I’m unsure if it offers any noticeable improvements. Any suggestions for a worthwhile upgrade under $100? I prefer the ASUS brand because of the familiar interface, though I’m open to other brands if it would be better.
Refer to the review piece on the RT-AC66U B1. Be aware that this was published when wireless-AC was still in early development. The summary notes this device isn’t a major leap compared to the N66U, particularly given the firmware limitations at that time. Also, Merlin has stopped supporting both models recently, though you might still run v380.70. What aspects of the RT-N66U feel missing to make an upgrade worthwhile? If its performance meets your needs, upgrading may not be necessary. Although the RT-N66U is a few years behind in WiFi technology, it still handles the essentials well.
Sounds like it does what you need it to do. No reason to spend money just to spend money. Keep what you have until it doesn’t work for your needs any longer.
