Hello, I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade my existing system or construct a new one. I recently installed a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and have a current build consisting of an i9 9900KS, an Asus ROG Strix Gaming OC with RTX 4070 Ti, an Asus ROG Maximus Xi HERO ATX, MOBO, and G.Skill Trident Z RGB RAM. I'm considering whether to keep using my existing components or replace everything. I’m thinking about using the M.2 storage for the new CPU but believe a full rebuild might be necessary. I’m open to suggestions and would like to explore options before my new chip arrives in January 2025. My primary needs are gaming, Discord communication, and general computing.
CPU/Motherboard/RAM should be all that is needed to change here.
PSU is enough and not old yet, no reason to swap it out. I have the 2016 model and it is still working.
I should add you may need to get the AM5 mounting kit for your cooler. You can request one from Noctua for free. They also sell them on Amazon and other etailers if you want it faster. Since you have the time, having one sent to you is the way to go.
I was considering swapping the cooler for the Deepcool AK500 DIGITAL 68.99 CFM model, but I need to check if my Noctura NH15 came with an AMD mount in the box, which I’m fairly certain it did.
My setup currently includes two intake fans, two exhaust fans on top of the GPU fans, and the PSU fan because I’ve been concerned about overheating.
When playing games like The First Descendant on Steam, I noticed my i9 9900K was reaching CPU temperatures between 97-100% after replacing my 2080 Ti with the newer 4070 Ti Super, so I wanted to confirm it was cooling properly.
My friends say it’s okay if some games push the CPU hard through the GPU, but I’m still getting used to it.

399 is a bit excessive, I’d definitely check the motherboard specifications to understand your actual requirements.
There are some good X870 boards available. E boards offer dual chipsets for many interfaces, but if you’re focusing on the GPU and using M.2 drives, you can save quite a bit.
There are some good suggestions for motherboards. I’m open to investing a bit more for a newer model that might include a 5090 when it’s released. If I decide to go that way, I’ll need a 1200 PSU, which I plan to get if the 5090 arrives, though I doubt I’ll be buying one right away. I’m also looking for x3 M.2 slots on the motherboard and want to steer clear of Gigabyte because I’ve heard mixed reviews about them. So at the moment, it seems like I’ll be swapping out the motherboard and RAM.
You can use a 5-year-old board to install a 5090, just need the right PCIe slot.
A 1200W isn't essential for a 5090; even if it's built to deliver 500-600W, a solid 1000W should work.
I don't have any issues with Gigabyte I know of. Right now, there are only a few main suppliers: ASUS, ASRock, MSI, and Gigabyte. Smaller brands like NZXT use other makers, and niche ones like Supermicro. Most others stop releasing new boards. Zotac is interesting—they used to make good budget MicroATX boards. Since they still make Nvidia cards, it seems odd.

I'm still unsure about the type of MMO I should get, but the Asus ROG STRIX X670E-E seems like a good choice.
I plan to upgrade my existing x2 M.2 990 Pro unit, which already runs Windows 10 Pro, and possibly add a 4TB M.2 drive for my previous slot. I might also consider a slightly larger M.2 storage option or a faster drive to replace my current 1TB one.
I often struggle to remove the screws on my M.2 drives without damaging them, so I hope this isn't a problem but it seems to be.
AM5 was built to be AM4 compatible. That mount should work but it may only work in one orientation. The kit is free from Noctua, no reason you can't get it.
