You're thinking about a few different ways to get your old laptop working again. Using DBAN to wipe the drive and then reinstalling Windows is a common method, but it’s important to follow proper steps. You can also remove the laptop key and download Windows from another computer, but you’ll need to keep the Microsoft Office license key safe. Saving that key and including it in your bundle is a smart idea if you want to keep Office functionality. Just make sure you back up any important data before proceeding.

you don’t need the original disc; it came with windows already installed. when you reinstall via usb, just make sure the key is placed in windows setup after installation. this should activate the new windows 7 version.

You've checked the BIOS settings and found only the hard drive as a boot option. Considering the DBAN protection, it's likely safe to restore your laptop to factory defaults. Since you bought it for school use and haven't accessed it much, the risk of sensitive data being exposed is low. This should be a straightforward process.

Consider using CCleaner's "Wipe Free Space" option instead of DBAN. This ensures deleted data can't be recovered while keeping your system windows functional. For thorough safety, run a complete cleanup with CCleaner to remove any sensitive information. If you're extra cautious, reset your account and then perform the wipe. Note that BIOS settings remain unaffected by DBAN—it only targets hard drives. After a factory reset, consider doing the wipe again for added protection.

Both agree that resetting the laptop to its original factory settings is the most effective and simple method to sell it, followed by clearing the storage space.
