What's the internet speed provided by your ISP? What's the strength of your connection? Can you still use an Ethernet cable? Also, keep in mind that strong upload and download speeds don't always mean a fast ping.

Turn off all Ethernet ports on the router that aren’t in use. Connect a networking switch such as the Link Netgear GS105AU (any brand works fine). Price is around 23 dollars.

I don't grasp the specific router model you're referring to, and without an active internet connection, it's unclear where you're linking up.

The main issue is your Wi-Fi connection, try using a cable if possible.

It seems like you're wondering whether the connection is likely wired or wireless.

It seems you're considering a cable TV service like Foxtel. You mentioned not being aware of Optus WiFi Gateway options, so yes, the person could opt for a Netgear Wi-Fi extender or an Ethernet adapter via power line.
