Looking for Ubiquiti solutions for small businesses?
Looking at a 5-user Sonicwall setup with an upcoming costly license renewal, consider Ubiquiti USG as a more affordable option. It offers 80Mbps down and 20Mbps up, a very flat network, basic VLAN support, no port forwarding or NAT rules—just direct internet access.
The security options available on the sonicwall include basic protection without a license, making it suitable for simple use. It likely retains similar safeguards as the USG Do. If you need more advanced features, consider upgrading to a router like an Edge or MikroTik device.
Honestly, there are no major features to mention—just the license for potential hardware support. Keeping the firmware current is essential. I’m considering staying with the SonicWall because the USG worries about business value beyond just features. Thanks for your assistance.
The Sonicwall was selected initially due to its advanced features and performance capabilities.
Take a glance at the Fortigate and inform both suppliers you're comparing options. This should secure a solid deal with either. Ubiquiti's IPS performance isn't great, but the USG might be a budget-friendly 'basic' firewall. I'd suggest setting up a pfSense installation as an amateur manager above either USG or Sonicwall. It looks like every client mentioning packet loss is using a Sonicwall.
With minimal inbound firewall rules and no IPS, your needs are limited. A USG isn't necessary. The Sonicwall might be excessive. A FortiGate 50E offers solid AV and IPS capabilities if that suits you.
The Sonicwall is a enterprise security device. Similar devices would be Fortigates/Palo Altos/Firepower. They have the ability to do IPS, SSL Decryption, inline antivirus, URL filtering, user id based policies, and other advanced security functions. Without the licenses they normally become a standard statefull firewall with the ability to provide granular policy control. The Ubiquiti Security Gateway doesn't have any of the advanced security features of the enterprise devices. It is basically a statefull firewall with some granular controls. I would suggest that there is little to no reason to swap the Sonicwall out with the Ubiquiti Security Gateway.
