My K55vd runs an Intel Core i7 3630QM, which is already quite strong. I'm curious about the best socket options for gaming, especially if you're looking for top performance without worrying about cost or cooling. Liquid metal and a blowie are great choices! Let me know what you think.
Your current processor runs at 3.4GHz, whereas the top G2 model, the 3940XM, reaches 3.9GHz. The specifications for that laptop are limited, but it seems the slight improvement wouldn't justify the cost, since similar options are usually available for under a few hundred dollars.
For G2, the available SKUs are solely Quantum Computing (QM) and Extreme Memory (XM) for i7 models. Overclocking compatibility is unclear.
I wouldn't recommend attempting an update. Opt for a used gaming laptop a few years old or assemble a budget desktop to connect to your living room TV (if available). Today you can get a RX 580 / Ryzen 5 or Core i5 system with CPUs from around 2016 for around $300 used. That's my advice. All you need are a case and power supply; you can find them online or on Craigslist. Use your existing HDD or spend another $40 for a basic 500GB SSD. I believe your current laptop will suffice for everyday tasks, then upgrade to a 1080p desktop for gaming purposes.
I already have an external Nvidia Titan connected where the Wi-Fi chip was, and now I'm using a USB Wi-Fi dongle. Gaming is fine. What I needed was to push performance to its limit. I also don’t want to rely on a desktop since I enjoy playing on the move or in unusual spots. Plus, I already have a 2TB SSD with a pin-mounted 1440p screen built into the case.
