Apologies if this was already mentioned. I'm nearing completion of the wiring for my home using Cat6, and it's time to upgrade to a 10G connection. I need equipment with multiple 10G copper ports, but I'm mostly familiar with Cisco products since I learned them on the job rather than in formal classes. I'd prefer a Layer 3 device, possibly something like an Arista 7050T, though I'm curious about other options. I'm aiming to keep costs under $1000.

It seems you're seeking high-end or professional-grade equipment, but Sunday might not be ideal. The process could take time to yield a solid response. Currently, 10g is just beginning to reach the consumer market, while 1g and 2.5G are more typical. Be prepared for some waiting.

Id stay away from those Arista switches. They run hot and louds, and will cost hundreds of dollars a year in power to operate them. Id probably get something like a https://mikrotik.com/product/crs312_4c_8xg_rm , and get a gig switch for stuff that doesn't need 10g as there much more reasonble for home uses. Do you need 10g line speed? You probably don't for home users, and just do switching for everything that needs speed.

You're considering swapping your 3560G for a higher-end model. The PowerEdge R620, R510, Cisco UCS C240-M3, and NetApp shelf already provide decent performance. It's worth noting that switches can draw significant power even without PoE.

From my experience, the 1RU and 2RU data center switches are noticeably quieter than the M3 server, particularly the older models. They handle cooling for optics and ASICs simultaneously. The 10g copper model (like the 7050T) also tends to get hot on its own. Edit: I should mention that often they reuse the same chassis and fans, so the fiber model uses the same setup as the copper one—regardless of noise reduction needs. This simplifies replacements because it avoids dealing with different fan types for each model.

It's understandable. Older PowerConnect switches tend to be noisy, though replacement fans are available—sometimes at a higher cost. Right now, only a handful of my devices require 10G, such as my gaming PC, FreeNAS, and UCS. I'm thinking about future upgrades as well.

It's generally tough to locate quiet fans for that kind of equipment, unfortunately
