Prefer using my existing Corsair Obsidian 750D Full Tower ATX case with CX750M power supply.
Current setup: As described below:
Motherboard: AususTech Z97-AR
Processor: Intel Core i7-4790 CPU, 4.0 GHz, 3600 MHz, 4 cores, 8 logical processors
Memory: 16 GB (DDR3), upgradable to 32 GB
Graphics Card: Nvidia GE Force GTX 760 (2 GB) with driver 27.21.14.5671
Power Supply: CX750M
WiFi card
Top Fans: Cougar PLA 12025812, CF-V12HB (2 each)
Front (2) and rear (1) fans: Corsair A14Z5L12S-2
Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:
I aim to modernize the system, increase computing power, improve video editing and photo work. I also want the graphics card to support both DisplayPort and HDMI for dual monitors. Since I’m not a gamer, I don’t require water cooling or high-end tech. I’d like RGB lighting and am fine with built-in WiFi. I’m uncertain how my current configuration will perform with Windows 11.
You’d require at least these components: CPU, motherboard, RAM, likely power supply; those four can be handled well for around 600 to 800 dollars. Add roughly 130 or 140 for Windows from a reputable vendor. For a 1500 dollar budget, you might opt for 32 GB of DDR5 memory with G.Skill Trident if you want RGB lighting. G.Skill Ripjaws would be an alternative if you prefer something different. A new aftermarket CPU cooler could be considered if you’re concerned about temperatures or noise. Some Intel processors come with a basic cooler that may suffice for your needs. The cost for a suitable cooler is probably between 50 to 100 dollars, with options from Deep Cool and Noctua among others. Check your current Corsair case’s airflow—does it support at least three fan mounts for fans of 120mm or bigger?
Drives: SSD is a must; possibly two NVMe drives. Storage capacity should be determined based on your needs. Important choices include Samsung and Western Digital.
Graphics card: You handle photo and video editing without a dedicated card, so clarification on usage would help.
Shopping options: Newegg is a viable source, and you mentioned purchasing in a store in Virginia. Are you tied to a Microcenter in Fairfax? They generally offer competitive pricing and a decent selection.
In 2017 it hasn't been utilized since the end of that year and isn't being challenged to obtain a new PSU (likely more efficient).
Currently there are 5 fans installed (1 rear, 2 front, 2 top). The top fan appears capable of supporting 3 120mm fans on the upper section.
1 (rear) & 2 (front) - A1425L12S-2 140mm quiet cooling fan 140*140*25mm DC12V 0.30A (Rated Current 0.18A) for computer case cooling, 870RPM
2 (top) - Cougar Vortex HDB 120 Cooling CF-V12HB, Black
Drives: I need at least two NVMe M.2 slots on the motherboard, plus space for several SSDs. Plenty of reference images available.
Video card - I use Pinnacle Studio on a separate machine. This one is intended for photo and graphics work as a hobby.
Yes, I plan to be in the VA area, making Fairfax Microcenter my home base. I previously lived in Northern VA and considered Microcenter my second home.
I would visit the Microcenter website in Fairfax to check their current offerings, especially regarding any bundles that include Intel CPUs. Perhaps I could use Newegg just to compare prices.
Intel is set to release 14th generation chips; likely starting with i5 and higher models such as 14600K, 14700K, 14900K. They might not appear in stores for a while.
Here are some basic options to consider for pricing at Microcenter:
Intel 13600K or 13700 CPU; possibly down to 13400 if budget allows.
Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z790 AORUS ELITE AX or MSI PRO Z790-A WIFI
RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 6000; CAS latency around 36?
Power supply: Seasonic Focus, 650 or 750 watts
CPU cooler: DeepCool AK620; fits 1700 socket
Drives: NVMe options; Samsung 970 Evo or Western Digital SN 770 in required sizes
Standard 2.5 inch SATA SSDs if needed: Crucial MX500 works well.
Check what Microcenter plans for these items and then reassess what remains to purchase and the remaining budget.
I don't have any of that. I haven't used graphics cards in more than ten years. My system still runs an Intel 6600K CPU from 2016, and the built-in video works just fine for what I need. Integrated graphics have seen a lot of improvements since then.
It's unclear what you're looking for—maybe nothing at all, or something as simple as a basic card. I really don't know. You probably already have everything you need.
You're definitely a much more accurate assessor of your own needs than I am.
Instead of ASAP, if possible, wait for the i7 14700 release and consider this option. Includes extra E cores.
