Assisting a friend with planning a build for the next month has been a bit of a back-and-forth. Considering his budget of around $1,200, I aimed to allocate about $500 for the main components—CPU, motherboard, RAM, and cooling. I planned roughly $500 for the GPU and $200 for the case and power supply. He already owns good peripherals, so no need for major upgrades there. A 6700K and 10700 series chipsets are quite outdated, but they’d offer a significant upgrade over his current setup. Since gaming is the main focus, I chose to keep 16GB of RAM as it’s straightforward now and easier to upgrade later if needed. The options that popped into my mind were:
1. AM4 Holdout (5800X3D + decent AM4 board + 16GB DDR4)
2. AM5 Entry level (7600 + decent AM5 board + 16GB DDR5)
3. Rkt Lake Midrange (13600KF + decent B660 board + 16GB DDR5)
I quickly ruled out the first choice because 5800X3D models still cost over $300, which isn’t worth it for gaming performance. A 13600KF on DDR4 matches the price of a 7600 model on DDR5, and the improved latency might actually help. We’re comparing 3200CL16 or 3600CL18 chips versus 5200CL36 on the 7600 platform.
Looking at prices, the Intel 7600 (K-series) is still competitive with AMD options, especially since an upgrade path will be easier in a few years. The AMD system could be more practical long-term, even though it’s slightly less optimal now. What are your thoughts?
I'm following the AM5 path and recently purchased a Patriot Ram, paying an additional $5 for 5600. I'm doing the same except without the motherboard—preferring ATX. I really appreciate the benefits of AM5 for its long-term reliability in this area. That would be my decision.
