Looking for suggestions on a work laptop?
My workplace offers me a laptop for my role. I already own a Microsoft Surface. Performance is quite low—just 1GHz processor and 8GB RAM. Transferring files to my desktop can take up to two minutes, which is far too slow for an upgrade. My manager suggested choosing one at Best Buy. I’m confident they wouldn’t mind buying it online either. It will be used mainly for basic tasks, but I’d prefer a larger screen and a physical keypad.
1. What is your budget? It’s covered by the employer, though they likely won’t exceed their limit.
2. What notebook size are you looking at? A bigger screen is better.
3. What resolution do you want? 1080P is acceptable.
4. Do you need a portable or desktop model? Portable.
5. How long should the battery last? It doesn’t matter much.
6. Would you like to play games on your laptop? If yes, please list the games and their desired settings (Low, Medium, High). NO.
7. What other functions do you want from the laptop? Photo/Video editing, Microsoft Teams meetings.
8. How much storage capacity do you require? Probably under 500GB.
9. If you have specific sites in mind for purchasing, please share their links—Best Buy or Amazon work best.
10. How long do you intend to keep the laptop? The employer will replace it if it becomes outdated.
11. What type of optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer, Bluray ROM/Writer, etc. None.
12. Please mention any brands you prefer and those you dislike, along with reasons. I’m not too concerned about brand names but want to avoid unnecessary pre-installed software. Our IT professional will handle the VPN and security setup.
13. Where are you based? USA.
14. Any other details you’d like to provide?
Return to the basics: what software will be operating on the system?
"Basic tasks" can vary a lot...
Typically, manufacturers list hardware needs as "minimum," "recommended," and "ideal."
You should avoid the minimum and aim for the highest level your company can afford.
Additional details are required.
I addressed every question in the pinned section. My laptop is mainly used for Outlook email, filling out fillable PDFs, scanning documents to my office, Microsoft Teams meetings, Google Directions, etc. Our IT person will set up the VPN and security configurations. It’s just a few basic tasks. The Microsoft Surface is outdated and very slow. I’m looking for something with updated specs, a bigger screen, and a numeric keypad as mentioned in the original post.
