I reside in the UK and am currently using BT. I'm considering swapping their homehub for something else but need guidance. I have BT fibre (FTTC) and plan to switch to Virgin next year for a 200mb FTTP plan. I want a reliable solution to support about 10-12 devices, including a gaming PC. My budget is £200 maximum unless it's worth more. I have some questions to clarify: Should I opt for a modem-router combo or separate modem and router? Which models do you recommend? (I’m open to buying a dedicated modem if that offers better setup.) What should I watch out for? Avoid certain brands and be mindful of possible installation challenges.

If you're looking for a top choice, I suggest checking out this Amazon link for the XR500 Gaming Router. It’s well-rated when set up properly and optimized for speed and performance. Just make sure you know how to configure it and use the right ports for best results.

On Virgin side you must use their own unit, though they can be converted to "modem" mode and then paired with your router. I’m not sure how BT handles this. I don’t have a clear suggestion for a device, but I’ve used one from Asus. It performed well for about two years before a random reboot caused issues. I suspect overheating inside might be the cause. Experiencing this twice on different models of the same family isn’t reassuring.
