Looking for recommendations on free or paid automated backup solutions compatible with Windows 10 and 11.
I recently upgraded and converted my audio CD collection. I made backup copies of the music folders using Windows 10’s copy and paste tool. The folders were quite large, and the copying process was slow. Updating them after ripping and converting a new CD album also took time.
I searched online for top 10 recommended sync and backup programs, but since the process was lengthy, I’m seeking a dependable free or affordable backup solution. It should back up my music folders to places like my internal and external drives, automatically updating when new files are added. I also need it to support both Windows 10 and 11.
Easy2Sync and Second Copy were on my list, but they seem limited to Windows 10, 8, and/or 7. I’d appreciate suggestions for backup and sync tools that can meet my requirements.
I rely on Macrium Reflect.
Paid for my primary drive, free elsewhere.
Complete drive copies, not just random folders.
For certain folders (the reason?), I previously used FreeFileSync or SyncBackFree.
Technically, Windows Media Player allows music played to be saved into its own backup file. I usually disable this feature to avoid duplicates in search results, but...
I should also note a point. Bit rot can occur. Store your source disks securely. Also, minor file fragments often disappear after transfers. Over time, I’ve spent about 20 to 30 seconds trimming the end of files during transfers—like moving them to a new disk. I made a mistake and discarded most of my CDs after doing the same, and I really wish I could change that choice.
I'd be a bit wary of "automated", depending on how highly you value the files.
I don't see any reason to use a paid solution, although Second Copy is superb. I used it for close to 10 years. I'd expect it to updated (if needed) to accommodate Windows 11. I'd get in touch with them....they might want to charge you again for the 11 upgrade if you bought 10 now.
SyncBackFree has worked fine for me for maybe 5 years.
FreeFileSync works very well, although I find the interface clunky.
