I'm sorry to hear that. My camcorders were Sony models, so I didn't encounter your problem. I was just looking for a solution for you.
You might want to post in a specialized AV Forum or contact Panasonic. It seems unusual that there would be no way to extract the video files from a Panasonic DV camcorder. You're not alone in this issue...

Just a note to indicate this thread is resolved and assist others in transferring their old DV tapes to Digital.
I remember back then (with a PC that had FireWire) that recording via FireWire produced better quality. Now, looking back, I suspect I created my own problem by assuming USB would work if FireWire did. Eventually, I realized the newer Windows version treated the camcorder differently. At first, it didn’t appear by name, so I tried WinDV and it showed up as a Microsoft device.
I purchased a FireWire card and a FireWire to DV cable on Amazon for $15. That’s how I managed to record my last two old videos digitally!
This was all accomplished using the latest version of Windows 11!!
