I need to purchase a new laptop mainly for video editing with Premiere Pro, supporting 4K and 1080p. I considered models featuring the Ryzen 9 4900HS but noticed some tests suggest that Intel QuickSync benefits from an Intel-based system, making an Intel laptop preferable. Regarding CPU options, would an 8-core i7 be better than a 6-core i7? Also, does the 6-core i7 perform more efficiently than the Ryzen 9 in these systems? All the GPUs listed are RTX 2060 or 2070.
Depends on how busy the project is since different tasks rely on the CPU differently. Much of the rendering speed depends less on the CPU and more on the codec and effects used. Still, for your situation… the main constraint will be the laptop size. It usually has limited cooling, so thermal issues will likely slow things down beyond what the CPU could improve. I’d recommend choosing a laptop you like based on other aspects and hope the effects you need run on the GPU when you pick it. Personally, I only discovered last month that After Effects’ Time Warp effect hasn’t been updated in over five years, making it one of the least optimized for rendering. lol
The laptops I've examined offer solid thermal management based on reviews. My priority is a smooth workflow during editing rather than just export speed. I'm aware that certain codecs can be challenging to work with (such as Sony H264 on the Alpha line) and some effects demand more GPU power than CPU. I'd like to understand which processor provides the most enjoyable editing experience among them.
