Looking for guidance on PC upgrades for real estate photography, video editing, and light gaming.
I’d appreciate some advice on improving my PC for the demands of real estate photography, video editing, and occasional gaming. As a photographer and content creator using Adobe Lightroom Classic, Premiere Pro, and After Effects, I produce material for a startup, and my current system functions well enough. However, when tackling heavy tasks such as 4K rendering or larger Lightroom files, I encounter performance challenges.
I’ve thought about upgrading to the new Mac Mini 4 following its release, given my experience with both Mac and Windows and my comfort with either platform. Still, I’d like to evaluate other possibilities to determine if optimizing my existing setup could be more practical.
Current Configuration:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X (6 cores, 3.8 GHz)
- Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 GAMING X ATX AM4
- RAM: 32GB (4 x 8GB) G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4-3600
- Storage: 480GB SSD for cache, 1TB NVMe SSD for programs/games, 2TB Samsung 870 QVO SSD for projects
- Graphics Card: MSI GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6
- Case: Corsair Carbide Series 275R ATX Mid Tower
- Power Supply: Rosewill Capstone 550W (80+ Gold)
- OS: Windows 11
Performance Challenges:
The main issues arise during real-time playback and exporting in Premiere Pro, as well as when importing or generating previews in Lightroom. Despite optimizing media cache settings and playback quality, the system occasionally slows down or stutters with 4K video files, which impacts my workflow efficiency.
Potential Upgrade Options and Thoughts:
- GPU: Exploring a switch to RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT could enhance Adobe software performance due to increased VRAM and acceleration. I’m curious about alternatives that fit my budget.
- CPU: Moving to a Ryzen 5800X or 5900X might boost multitasking and rendering in After Effects, especially for heavy effects. I’d love to hear others’ experiences with these upgrades.
- Power Supply: I’m unsure if a 550W PSU is sufficient after potential upgrades, so I’d appreciate guidance on the right wattage needed.
Alternative Perspective:
I’m also pondering whether switching to a Mac Mini 4 would be beneficial. It could offer a more streamlined experience, particularly for creative tasks, and might be easier to manage compared to a full PC upgrade.
Questions:
- Would upgrading to an RTX 3060 or RX 6700 XT be justified for my workflow, or are there better options for Adobe performance?
- Could a Ryzen 5800X or 5900X CPU provide a meaningful improvement in real-time playback and rendering within Adobe apps?
- Is a power supply upgrade necessary, or should I stick with my current 550W unit?
- What storage recommendations exist to handle large video and photo files more efficiently?
Thank you for your time! Your insights would be greatly valued, especially from those who use similar software or balance content creation with light gaming.
I encounter some performance challenges. Understood within the broader discussion. It would be better to measure the current performance as accurately as possible and then share the data. What resources are being utilized, and how much of each is consuming them? There are several methods to find a clear, quantifiable view of system performance. Tools like Task Manager, Resource Monitor, and Performance Monitor can help set benchmarks and guide improvements. It’s possible there’s just one main factor limiting speed. = = = = I also considered the 550 Watt PSU. Check this link for more information: Not necessarily to buy a new unit right away, but to understand PSU specifications and use the wattage calculators. It’s fine to look it up.
