Hello, I have a question about fiber networking. I’m new to the topic and only read online. I currently have a 1.5Gbps connection directly via fiber into my home. The internet comes through an SFP, which connects to an ISP via a single 1Gbps switch. There’s also Wi-Fi available. I know my login details. My question is, if I replace the router with a 10Gbps MNPA19-XTR and run something like pfSense on it, would I still be able to use it as a router/firewall and connect wireless access points?

No, they won't be monitoring your ISP when you change your hardware.

I didn't find anything in the terms of service, except that if I needed help it would have to come through the hardware. It's more about wanting full 1.5 Gbit available to the network rather than anti-tracking concerns. I'd like to be able to download and upload at full speed 1.5 Gbit from all 10 GB devices, so I can access files from NAS at 10 Gbit without needing multiple devices. Right now, I have to use two devices to get close to that speed.

I'm declining because the ISP restricts access to only certain approved devices, typically maintaining an official equipment list. Using personal gear requires registration of its MAC address, etc. Their policies might vary from yours.

another concept that doesn’t seem promising is connecting two 1Gbps cables from the pfSense in a wan setup. Would that allow access to the 1.5 Gbps as it would provide sufficient bandwidth through the space? My aim is for the pfSense to fully utilize the 1.5 Gbps connection, and my ISP is Bell Canada.

It won't function since you require an ONT controlled through GPON or xGPON with a GPON SFP. Users don't just possess a single direct fiber connection.

They probably have a specific setup you can’t change, so you might need to contact your ISP for a 'wires only' option. Their response could vary, but I wouldn’t bother unless necessary.

I have been looking at telus allowing nokia gpon sfp adapters to work the issue is this, isp mine at least does not want the customer to mess with the fiber itself. fragile and costly to fix. I know of cases were customers cut the fiber right at the wall. isp goes to hook up the customer again or a new one and has to fish in a new line. Sometimes not as nice as before Customer expects it to be just like the old copper, can't you just spice with the 1/2 inch of fiber left? I would love to skip the ont/power supply as I just have internet and nothing else. Then there is the issue with dial tone on fiber. Battery backup in case power goes out.

It depends on the network platform provided by the ISP. With ours, you're limited to using our brand for GPON. GPON isn't a simple setup because it involves many layer 2 components. That's why experienced technicians usually install a splice at the ONT, handling just a patch instead.

I don't believe I got the explanation correct. The ISP device you're referring to is likely a Nokia Gpon ON SFP (G-010S-A) into a Sagemcom 5566, often called the Home Hub 3000 or HH3K. You're thinking of using a Mellanox MNPH29C-XTR, placing the SFP inside and running PFSSense. Then another SFP connects to a switch that splits the network elsewhere.
