Hey there! You're dealing with some connectivity hiccups with your current setup. It sounds like you're experiencing Wi-Fi drops and issues with file transfers when using YouTube. The Dream router was suggested, but it's not available right now. You're looking for a reliable option with plenty of LAN ports—something solid for your 1Gb Internet plan.

What rates are you charging? Because quicker connections require a more advanced SOC in the router, thanks to NAT and other functions it performs. I own the Synology RT 2600AC, it has been an excellent router with impressive capabilities. I believe it can support internet speeds up to roughly 800 Mbps. They appear to have a newer model with Wi-Fi 6, which would be great. Their firmware looks reliable.

PfSense would be my top preference. I’d look for a device with at least 2.5GB networking, as ISPs often exceed your rated speed. (You’ll also need a modem supporting 2.5GB.) It’s not the most intuitive setup, but it offers many features. The Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro Special Edition would be my second option. It includes dual WAN ports—one for 2.5GB and another for 10GB. This model is very user-friendly and simple to configure via a mobile app.

Just wanted to note this. Even with a router that supports Gigabit WAN, it doesn’t guarantee it can handle Gigabit internet speeds. Usually, checking the LAN to WAN and WAN to LAN performance gives a better sense of download and upload capabilities. Most manufacturers don’t share this information publicly. So, no matter which router you choose, make sure its hardware is capable of supporting Gigabit. I don’t have any recommendations for routers that actually do it, unless we get upgraded for free.
