I might lack sufficient experience with Windows regarding file server operations to fully understand its capabilities. I often hear about people using Ubuntu for file servers, which provides a lot of information. Windows does have Windows Server, but that limits the scope for additional tasks like XBMC and virtual machines... as far as I understand. Let me know if that's incorrect.

Windows can function as a file server quite effortlessly, and it supports Hyper-V in versions like 8.1 Pro or Server 2012 R2. Mastering the process on Linux adds significant value and can lead to comparable or improved results.

Plus one Windows device handles everything smoothly, whether it's the server, pro, or home edition. My current NAS uses Windows 8.1 Home and has accomplished most of what you discussed. But it really depends on your familiarity and comfort level.

I believe I'll try Ubuntu. That said, through Dreamspark I have a server from 2008 or 2012, so if that doesn't work out, I'll fall back to that.
