Hello, everyone. In late 2014 I built my newest PC and at that time I had the top hardware available. Now my setup is a bit outdated and it’s beginning to struggle with the newest titles. Here’s what I’m considering right now: an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Intel Core i7 4790K with 4 cores, 8 threads, 32GB DDR3 RAM at 2133MHz, a Crucial BX500 SSD (500GB) connected via a 500MBps SATA drive, an MSI GTX 1070 8GB powered by a 650W PSU, a LG UL850 27" 4K HDR display. I’m using a mechanical keyboard from Phanteks, a mouse by Logitech, and I plan to use the new RTX 3060TI soon. To improve performance without breaking the bank, I want to upgrade a few parts while staying within a budget of around 500 EUR to 750 CAD or 560 USD. I’m not after overkill or the latest models; I just need reliable, functional gear for gaming. I prefer components that are still available online, even if they’re older, especially if they’re cheap (like CPUs from 3-4 years ago). Since I have a Mac for work, my PC is solely for gaming, so I only need the essentials. I don’t mind buying parts from different generations, as long as they’re affordable and easy to source. Could you share your thoughts on this setup? Is it a sensible choice compared to what I have now? Thank you!

likely setup around 3600x with 4x8 RAM, plus a 3000+ MHz RAM kit. consider a Samsung EVO/Pro series or Sabrent Rocket NVMe SSD.

This setup would cost roughly $100 extra compared to what I suggested. Finding a 3600 model is currently tough (only one available on Amazon). Is the improvement worth that amount? Thanks!

When discussing second-hand parts, it's important to specify your location so others can search effectively; pricing for used items varies widely. Your suggested component list aims to match an unlocked processor with a non-overclockable system—consider saving money by choosing a 9700 or upgrading the motherboard to a more affordable option. I wouldn't recommend purchasing an SSD smaller than 1TB.

Sorry, I didn't specify my location before—I added Italy now for the post. I'm not keen on buying used because of the risks involved. Overclocking isn't my thing, but I could splurge a bit more (20-30$) on a motherboard if it makes sense. Do you have any recommendations? For the SSD, 500GB should be fine since I rarely run two large games at once, and open-world titles usually hit around 150GB. Thanks!

You can't boost the 9700k speed on that board, making it a poor choice unless you're using a locked system. For better insights, Hardware Unboxed offers solid motherboard comparisons.
