Since you have a modem and router combined in one unit, routers serve multiple networking purposes. Upgrading software on gateways is usually limited because only your ISP can provide updates for modems on their network. Generally, AIO devices perform poorly—they often have weak WiFi or the router itself is quite unreliable. Using separate devices tends to be more reliable. Modems are typically long-lasting, whereas routers may need replacement every few years. I’ve been using the same cable modem for over five years and updated the router at least twice.

I usually throw it out since I keep using it until I run out of space. The only time I changed it was because WPA2 got cracked.
