Preferred setup is solid. I own an i5-6500, plenty of DDR3 modules, SSDs, and a GPU (though calling the GT 1030 a GPU is a bit generous). I already have OS, power supply, and Wi-Fi. What I’m looking for is another DDR3-compatible board to pair with the CPU. Not aiming for a gaming rig, just for Linux. Any recommendations?

The Asus Z170I seems suitable but costs around 150 dollars. Avoid the AsRock boards.

The 6500 requires DDR4, not DDR3. The sixth generation CPUs marked the debut of consumer versions from Intel that supported this standard.

Skylake and Kabylake work with DDR3 as long as your motherboard can handle it.
