He gave me his old Toshiba Satellite P10-874 laptop, and I'm planning to upgrade it with Linux because the Windows XP is still infected with viruses. I'm unsure whether to perform a clean install of XP or just switch to Linux. If I choose Linux, which version should I use? For selling purposes, I'd prefer a desktop version—maybe Mint from some time ago would work well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Mint resembles Windows in its interface. Debian, Lubuntu, and Kubuntu are all relatively lightweight options.

The concept may need to be abandoned since the screen shows no visible image. Backlight is activated but other indicators are absent. Check if Mint's lightweight version fits your needs or consider alternatives.

I think Mint is quite thin, but you might want to test a couple by downloading ISOs and creating live install USBs.

Many strange characters appear on the screen indicating a failure... Looks like the GPU is dead. No saving possible. Thanks for your response, I'll remember this for future reference.

Older hardware performs exceptionally well on OpenBSD. It offers a lighter footprint compared to other Linux distributions.
