Looking for a game your dad would enjoy playing.
Looking for a game your dad would enjoy playing.
Hello (whatever time you are currently).
It has happened. My father, who began his journey many years ago building his own PCs and playing games such as Quake, Unreal and Doom, has stopped playing. His age—59—is not the issue here. He remains a passionate fan of all Unreal Tournament titles and always played them as if there was no tomorrow.
When he learned about an upcoming Unreal Tournament 4 release, he even purchased a new machine with a GTX 1070, which filled him with excitement while testing the open alpha version of the game.
But then he discovered that UT4 would be discontinued due to Fortnite development. That news broke his heart. Since then, he hasn’t used his PC again.
He played Doom as his final title, mainly because I gave it to him.
He owns a 1700$ machine, barely dusty, and my mother mentioned he’s aging quickly since he’s no longer training his hand-eye coordination or reaction times.
He once ranked 8th in the Unreal Tournament 3 world. You might have met him in an intense match on Suspense (his username is McMar).
My mother asked if I could suggest a game she could buy him so he could play again on his machine. He used to set aside two weekends each month to play for a few days, enjoying a cold whiskey with Coke.
The challenge is that he struggles with games requiring gear upgrades, weapon changes (like in BF), learning new heroes (especially in arena shooters), and heavy English communication (he doesn’t speak it well).
He tried Quake Champions but didn’t enjoy it. He really enjoys arena FPS games in the style of Unreal Tournament.
Anyone have an idea about a suitable title for him? It should fit his machine (i7-8gen, GTX 1070), be mostly multiplayer, not too old, and require minimal learning (different heroes, weapon sets, special abilities, and communication).
It doesn’t need to be an arena FPS.
I just want my dad to have some fun again.
Thank you very much for all your suggestions,
since I don’t play FPS games myself, I lean more toward strategy and simulation titles.
Have a great day!
Thanks for the quick replies!
Wrath: Aeon of ruin seems appealing, I’ll check it out. Multiplayer or co-op would be nice.
CS:Go and Rainbow Six siege might be too tough for him, I’ll take a look.
I have explored Ranbow Six Siege, tried CS:GO on my roommate's PC, and researched contract wars.
Rainbow Six Siege might be too challenging for my dad.
CS:GO seems like a solid option for him; I’m unsure about his opinion on the more realistic damage mechanics and death speed compared to UT. Because it’s free-to-play, he can test it himself and decide if it suits him.
I’m also downloading contract wars now to see what’s available. (Since it’s F2P, why not give it a shot instead of just watching videos?)
Are there any players who enjoy DOOM (2016) Multiplayer? Do you know how many still play DOOM Eternal in multiplayer? I also found some info about Darksouls campaigning.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.
Doom Eternal is launching soon, isn't it?
Alternatively, the classic 'genre' of FPS titles appears to be resurfacing, from games like Wolfenstein and Doom, all the way back to retro-style projects from indie creators.
In reality, it really depends on your dad's interest. If he doesn’t care, it might be time to switch to another hobby and even consider selling, as you could potentially earn at least 1k for the machine—or more.
The gaming world has evolved significantly over the years I’ve been playing. Of course, I started when I was about three, but I’ve been a dedicated gamer for roughly the past 25 years. During that time, I’ve witnessed game prices skyrocket, yet console titles often come with full bundles, while PC games are released as complete packages with expansions added later at a much lower cost.
Then digital distribution took over, and DLC became the new way to expand experiences, gradually breaking down the base game into separate sales. And let’s not forget loot boxes.
Given all this, it’s easy to understand why someone who has spent that long gaming might feel disheartened or let down by what the industry has become. It’s no longer the era of passionate 'nerds in their basement' crafting something meaningful. More often than not, it’s turned into a soulless process of releasing the same game with a new number at the end.
So, to address your query, here are some game recommendations if your dad is open to exploring non-FPS options:
I believe Wolfenstein 2 new colossus might be a game he’d enjoy (even if just once since it lacks multiplayer) and the sound effects are impressive too.
I recall he played the earlier Wolfenstein titles (Return to Castle Wolfenstein), though I’m not sure if they’re from the same company. It’s priced at 19,99 and available in a nearby shop, which could be a nice way to bring him back into gaming. Doom Eternal sounds promising based on some articles I’ve seen; he also liked the previous Doom version.
Do you know if Prey is the same game as the original one or a different title? From what I understand, he enjoyed the earlier version as well.
I truly value your time when giving this suggestion. Even though the market has changed over the years, there must be a spot for older gamers like my dad.
In terms of Wolfenstein, it's the same brand, just updated for today's time like Doom was.
Regarding Prey, if you're referring to the original Xbox 360 version, I think it's quite different, but don't worry about that.
Just a note, not sure if this is okay and sorry if we need to adjust: https://www.cdkeys.com/pc/games/wolfenst...eam-cd-key
The deluxe edition worldwide code costs £17.49, which could be a better deal if you buy locally instead of online.
