I wanted to construct a new machine since I needed to assess my skills and upgrade my Mac Pro, which became frustrating to use. Thus, I chose to build a computer with better specifications than mine. However, I soon realized there were no suitable motherboards available that matched my needs. Before anyone suggests otherwise, I’m actually working on a build using mostly components and am aware that newer CPUs are more efficient. Are you looking at these components already? It makes little sense to purchase LGA1366 from the ground up when LGA2011 offers double the density of cores and memory at the same cost. A quicker option would be to use a dual socket workstation such as an HP Z800 or Z820.
An evga sr2 can handle some tasks, but a 110$ ryan zynga 5600 wi-fi can really boost performance. Dual xeon e5690 chips often deliver solid results, and 1366 typically caps at 48gb due to past standards. Pushing it to 96gb is possible but challenging, while 192gb is limited by hardware design. This setup focuses more on speed than raw efficiency. If you're not gaming, it won't be great for modern apps, especially with high-end graphics.
For improved performance, opt for a modern ATX setup with one 12c/24t CPU. Fewer components mean a cleaner build and better efficiency. You can even upgrade your Mac Pro with a Dremel if you're handy—there are kits available for Mac Pro or PowerMac chassis. Until then, a ton of units failed, many survived without random crashes but eventually stopped booting, and they tend to be costly. This approach suits enthusiasts more than practical needs, and it's not ideal for everyday use.
I tried it with a kit from The Laser Hive: https://thelaserhive.com/product/atx-low-120-kit/. It’s a cool project, but it doesn’t seem worth the effort. A proper case is far easier to manage. I’m limited to fitting two 3.5" drives, which is fine. Luckily my board has NVMe ports, so I used an adapter that turns one 3.5" slot into two 2.5" bays. Unless I remove the top shelf, I can only use blower-style GPUs; otherwise the card would overheat. The photo below shows my current setup, with the G5 shroud plate and front fans still in place.
