I haven't paid much focus to hardware updates for a few years now, but I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU. I looked into the i7 9900k and found the Ryzen 9 3900x, which offers 12 cores and is just £20 more than the i7 at the moment. A quad-core 4th gen i7 running at 4.9ghz sounds unreal coming from a previous generation. Is the Ryzen 9 a solid choice?
The R9 3900X offers slightly reduced single-threaded speed versus the i9-9900K, so modern games may run a bit slower on that platform with current GPUs. However, the gap is minimal and the multi-threaded performance will become more valuable in upcoming titles as newer games utilize multi-threaded tasks. TL;DR: consider the 3900X if you want better future gaming potential.
