Locating the perfect RPG feels out of reach for me.
I've been attempting to enter open world titles such as Skyrim, Witcher 3, Oblivion or various RPGs. The main issue that bothers me is how predictable the environments are and their overall lack of intrigue. They don't offer much mystery or truly draw me into the experience. Probably because developers nowadays prioritize simpler open world structures with scattered details, some settlements, etc. Still, I'm seeking games with deeper gameplay, where weapon systems vary meaningfully beyond just stats, focusing on movement and balance. I also want more randomized drops, making high-tier gear harder to obtain, which would encourage investment in character development—perhaps unique items suited to specific builds. This could add motivation for creating new characters. For me, many RPGs feel more about guided experiences than engaging, hands-on play.
It's rare to find mainstream RPGs with that unique feel. Maybe revisit SW:KotOR? That title was powerful and had an engaging narrative. Alternatively, consider Mass Effect for its depth and strategic gameplay. Or, for a challenge where combat truly matters, try Dark Souls.
I’d consider playing Arma 3, though I’m not a big fan of military shooters. Before anyone says open world games are easier to develop, I’d like to share some thoughts on Dark Souls as an example of intricate linear design. It wasn’t flawless—missing character depth and relying heavily on randomness—but it had a compelling passive system similar to Path of Exile, which could enhance an RPG experience.
In Skyrim, the Voliens kill move is a popular and well-regarded modification.
It seems similar to Fallout 3. The top weapon in the game appears only during a random event.
Same vessel, I hope it works! Much of the creativity gets omitted in open-world titles, letting players roam freely rather than thinking about what might lie ahead or doubting the world they can reach.
