Companies are focusing on USB 2 dongles to ensure compatibility with older devices, and the transfer speed remains adequate for WiFi use. For many years I experienced WiFi issues until I understood that USB 2 gadgets must fit into USB 2 ports for best results. I used the blue slots at the top for stronger signals... a big oversight. Later I tried inserting it into a black USB port and everything functioned flawlessly—no interruptions, no drops during games. It’s now reliable. Inserting a USB 2 HDD into a 3.0 port causes speed fluctuations. USB 3 devices work without problems in USB 2 slots.
I don’t have specific references beyond what’s commonly known. If you’re looking for credible backing, consider peer-reviewed studies or official reports from reputable institutions.
I discovered this on my own after realizing for a long time that using USB 2 drives in USB 3 ports would slow things down. After testing two drives together, I concluded it was similar with dongles, and it worked for me.
It seems the problem might be specific to your motherboard's USB controller rather than USB 3 ports in general. I've tested high-speed USB 2.0 devices such as webcams, microphones, WiFi dongles, and an old external HDD across many computers, and I haven't encountered this issue before.
I experienced intermittent drops in connection speed on two computers, with the link sometimes cutting out completely before stabilizing. If you possess the HDD, you can perform the check, though results vary by drive. I’m a big collector of data and have around nine different storage devices.
Each of your answers is tailored specifically to your environment and offers little relevance to other systems or devices.
Why? You mentioned having three kids who are each twice your age, which suggests a clear pattern or reference point.
you have an extremely low sample size of hardware almost zero diagnostics other than simply changing usb ports of the low amount of sample hardware , none is actually listed nothing regarding the network configuration physically or settings wise is listed essentially the only information or conclusion that can be drawn from this is ....... some of YOUR usb ports on some form of computer YOU have with some form of network work better than others. Thats about it.
I usually connect to a wireless access point using P2P mode. It then appears on my Ethernet port, possibly routed through a switch for sharing with other devices. To note, most current computers have very few or no USB 2.0 ports. Ideally, a properly built USB 3.x port would work backward without issues, though some older controllers might not handle it well.
Yes 2 is an incredibly low sample size to dish out generalized advice. now dont get me wrong , if only 2 computers existed on earth.... it would be very comprehensive. But seeing as your configuration not only is unknown but also not diagnosed at all , it's generally uninformed information that only pertains to you specifically. which means you could have just typed a status update that says you've solved your own wifi issue.
