I understand that staying safe from viruses is straightforward, but I was just seeking extra defense. Since I often use public Wi-Fi, I rely on a VPN for that reason—I thought an additional layer wouldn’t hurt.

Linux offers the advantage of keeping two passwords: your regular login password and the root password. Avoid using the root password in places where you're not comfortable or for activities you're unsure about. Having root privileges on Linux is far more robust than standard administrator rights on Windows.

Many have mentioned that Linux doesn't require antivirus. But if you think it's necessary, I suggest ESET Nod32 for Linux or Comodo Antivirus.

No AV required. Viruses exist but are usually fixed promptly. Many Windows malware are crafted for Linux systems. A firewall is typically included in reputable distributions. That should cover your needs.
