Hello everyone! I'm starting to experiment with Linux and it feels like I'm getting the hang of it (using the terminal gives me that badar** energy). But my laptop temps jumped from around 40-50°C to 70°C. Is there a way to keep it cooler or any app that helps? Thanks! My specs are an HP HP-AMDG Ryzen 3 3200U with Radeon Vega 3 graphics.

Checked the fan control settings in BIOS or OS during Windows use. Current Linux distribution being run. Kernel version is uname -r.

What temperatures do you experience in Windows under similar conditions? A quick search suggests 70°C could be acceptable for CPU temperature. But if it feels higher than expected and your fans run slowly or barely, it may relate to fan control not being activated. On Linux, fan settings differ from Windows, and power-saving features might be less aggressive. In short: if fans still increase when stress occurs, you’re likely okay. Run a brief stress test to check if temps rise dangerously. If they remain normal and fans spin faster, it’s probably safe. Differences in CPU or fan control between OSes are common.

I made just one adjustment in the BIOS—added "secure boot." The distro remains Mint 19 with kernel 5.5.5-32-generic. I'll review it later. Thanks.

I haven't run stress tests on this laptop in Windows yet. The fan speed came up to 0 rpm with LM-sensors, which seems unusual. I’ll try it again later and check the BIOS as TheFlyingSquirrel recommended. Thanks! Have a great day.

Recent update. After reviewing the Bios settings, I couldn't change the fan speed, so I opted to install TLP and managed to bring the temperature down to about 60 degrees. The fans increased a bit, which is acceptable. Thanks for your time and help. Wild penquin, The flying squirrel.
