Hey! ^^ I’m using a dualboot setup with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.10 (previously Mint 18.0). I’ve been trying to switch between them but ran into some issues. The old Mint version kept crashing into a black screen every few minutes, and there were driver problems too. Recently, Mint stopped working altogether. I tried Ubuntu after that, but it’s the same problem—same crashes, no booting. If I don’t use my PC at all, nothing happens. I can watch peaceful Ubuntu Desktop, but anything else causes it to freeze or crash. The keyboard and mouse work fine in Ubuntu, but the screen goes black and the Num Lock doesn’t respond well. It’s frustrating. What should I do? And why does this happen? MOBO: ASUS MAXIMUS VIII RANGER Z170 CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 GPU: MSI Radeon R9 390 RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 2x4GB 2666MHz CL16 HDD: Seagate ST1000VX000 1TB WiFi via some USB Tplink

the update at 16.10 seems problematic; consider reverting to earlier versions like 16.04 or 14.10, particularly if you're using an AMD card.

It seems the graphics driver might be the problem. Try starting with the built-in GPU to check if the issue persists.

Your description doesn't point to a graphics driver problem since you confirmed the liveCD works but crashes when launching the installer. Make sure your USB/CD drive is in good condition and check the downloaded ISO using the checksum at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM. If that fails, proceed with the LTS version of Ubuntu 16.04, as I only use these stable releases due to previous issues. The supported Debian LTS versions are: 2013 Debian 7, 2014 Ubuntu 14.04, 2015 Debian 8, 2016 Ubuntu 16.04. All of them remain compatible; the oldest, Debian 7, stays supported until May 2018. Other older versions exist but would extend the list unnecessarily, especially since your hardware isn't that old.
