Kernel updates matter for driver compatibility. I moved from Debian to Ubuntu after buying a 10-series NVIDIA because Ubuntu stable comes with a kernel that works without extra tweaking. I relied on Arch Linux when I had a netbook since it offered the latest kernel with the Wi-Fi driver I required.
