Hello from Australia, my ISP provided me with a DSL modem router that didn’t perform well. It seems to be a Netgear model, but it’s hard to confirm due to branding and custom firmware. While it offers some features, its performance is lacking, so I’m hesitant about using it as a router. I attempted to configure the device to function solely as a modem, while the R6300 running DD-WRT handled routing. Here’s what I did: the IP address was changed to 10.1.1.2, DHCP disabled, and bridge mode activated (which mostly turned off settings except for the IP). I switched off WiFi and connected the routers via a LAN cable—no crossover, not linked to WAN. Despite these changes, I still couldn’t access the internet. I can reach both routers through the R6300’s WiFi but not the wider network. I’ve attached screenshots of the router settings, though I missed capturing the modem when it was set up. Any advice would be appreciated. Networking is really frustrating for me!

The gateway refers to your ISP modem router, not the new device, and no DNS servers were mentioned. You need them to access websites.

On the DD-WRT router, you need to configure the default gateway to 10.1.1.2, which is the IP of your modem or router when it's acting as a modem. Then set your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. You don't necessarily have to change the port on the modem itself—just ensure the correct gateway and DNS settings are applied. If you're not in the same building and it's not midnight, you can proceed with these changes. Cheers!

Link the modem and the new router's LAN together. Set the modem as the gateway and choose any DNS service you prefer.

It seems like you're setting up an Inet router. Start by accessing the ISP router, turn off the wireless option, then set up your local network in bridge mode. After that, configure dd-wrt as a PPPOE router and connect the configured WAN port to the ISP router.
