Hello, in our school the next class will use Microsoft Surfaces during lessons. I need ideas on how to ensure an exam-free environment. The device should be fully unlocked unless it’s booting into exam mode. In that mode, it must load an image from a USB drive and only allow files from that USB. No access to other partitions or data. This could work with a virtual machine, but I’m worried it might be easy to minimize and steal information. I’m looking for a free solution. UnRaid seems possible, though setting it up for all students is tricky. Would you know of any alternatives? It would also help if the system had a clear sign that someone tried to cheat by minimizing the VM. Thanks in advance!

You can start Windows from a USB drive, then employ GPO to conceal the internal storage device.

Great, everything appears to work well. I can also turn off network drivers, duplicate multiple USB sticks, and set up a user with no admin rights for the exam. Seems like a simple and effective approach.
