You bought the i9 12900k and noticed the motherboard has both an 8-pin and an additional 4-pin connector for CPU power. Since your 850W power supply doesn’t include this extra connector, you’ll need it if you plan to overclock. It’s not mandatory, but having it would be beneficial for future upgrades.

What kind of power source do you possess? It's unlikely a contemporary 850W unit would lack a minimum of two CPU power connectors.

It's an HX850i, about two years old. It features two 8-pin CPU connectors, though it lacks a 4-pin one.

The 8-pin configuration is 4+4. You typically need to use only half of it. Often, it can be divided into two equal parts.

Absolutely, it's helpful to keep that extra 4-pin connection available even when you're not running at full speed.

Just proceed with the input. It will not be utilized, but it won’t cause any issues.

The 12900k draws more current than one standard 8-pin connector can handle when under stress. Refer to the previous note.

This setup reduces stress on every cable since power can travel through both. Additionally, even when operating at full capacity, the 12900K may surpass the maximum rating of a single 8-pin cable, which is 235W.
