Limited to 4.6Ghz performance for this i5-9500k processor
EDIT: See latest post. 4.7Ghz stable. Hi guys, thought I'd create a profile to share my story/issue. I've tried overclocking my cpu a couple of times. 5Ghz - Failed. Does not boot to windows. Got it to boot once but with 1.4v+ (not a good idea). 4.8Ghz - Not stable/crashes after a few minutes 4.6Ghz - Stable. No crashes, idle temps 30-38. Load 60-75 I have been trying for 2-3 days with no luck. STRAIGHT POWER11 CM 650W ATX24 * Yes it's a bad cooler with its 130W max TDP. I only got it because it was cheap and I was not planning on overclocking back then. ** I know that this mobo is not the greatest for overclocking, but it should work. I have tried a few online guids but non of them worked. MSI even recommended 1.43V for 5Ghz... Yeah, that's a big no.. I am going to buy a be quiet! Dark Rock 4 with a max TDP of 200W. Should I be able to clock 5Ghz @1.35V? Am I missing some BIOS settings? I really want to see how far I can push it with this build (after I get the cooler..) Thank you for reading and your comments. All help/feedback is appreciated.
I managed to reach 4.8Ghz at 1.29V, but once I started using Cinebench or playing Destiny 2, the system would freeze. A test with Aida64 for about 15 minutes at 4.6Ghz showed stable performance. The speeds were solid, and I’m confident I can hit 4.8Ghz consistently. Just need to check if any BIOS settings are affecting it.
I don’t understand. I’m not the right person for this. I haven’t touched a chip since that 4770k, which used a different setup. Some of you here are still familiar. What I can say is you need to push something really hard to test your overclock, and even then there might be problems. I could finish a 1-hour prime95 stress test at 4.2, but it would still cause occasional weird behavior on me.
It's really annoying. Some stores charge extra for protest chips, and if every processor could handle 4.5, Intel would market it as a 4.5 model.
