EDIT: See latest post. 4.7Ghz stable. Hi guys, thought I'd create a profile to share my story/issue. I've tried overclocking my cpu a couple of times. 5Ghz - Failed. Does not boot to windows. Got it to boot once but with 1.4v+ (not a good idea). 4.8Ghz - Not stable/crashes after a few minutes 4.6Ghz - Stable. No crashes, idle temps 30-38. Load 60-75 I have been trying for 2-3 days with no luck. Current stable OC settings: Base clock: 4.6Ghz Ratio mode: Fixed Ring ratio: 4.3Ghz Intel Turbo boost: disabled XMP: Enabled DRAM reference clock and frequency: Auto CPU Core Voltage mode: Override CPU Core Voltage: 1.32 AVX: -2 Intel C-Statee: Disabled Long Duration Power Limit: 300 Long Duration Maintained(s): 128 Short D0uration Power Limit 300 CPU LLC - Mode 6 Here is my build: CPU I5-9600k Cooler Cryorig M9 plus* Mobo MSI MPG Z390 GAMING EDGE AC** Memory D416GB 2666-16 Vengeance LPX bk K2 COR GPU GiBy6GB D6 RTX 2060 OC 6G PSU be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER11 CM 650W ATX24 * Yes it's a bad cooler with its 130W max TDP. I only got it because it was cheap and I was not planning on overclocking back then. ** I know that this mobo is not the greatest for overclocking, but it should work. I have tried a few online guids but non of them worked. MSI even recommended 1.43V for 5Ghz... Yeah, that's a big no.. I am going to buy a be quiet! Dark Rock 4 with a max TDP of 200W. Should I be able to clock 5Ghz @1.35V? Am I missing some BIOS settings? I really want to see how far I can push it with this build (after I get the cooler..) Thank you for reading and your comments. All help/feedback is appreciated.

Heh, my 4770k was meant to reach 4.5, but I never got past 4.0. It’s like sometimes you just miss the silicon lottery.

I managed to reach 4.8Ghz at 1.29V, but once I started using Cinebench or playing Destiny 2, the system would freeze. A test with Aida64 for about 15 minutes at 4.6Ghz showed stable performance. The speeds were solid, and I’m confident I can hit 4.8Ghz consistently. Just need to check if any BIOS settings are affecting it.

Freezing indicates the overclock wasn’t reliable. I once achieved 4.6 on an older chip, but at 4.1 crashes would occur every few weeks. It looks like stability drops after 4.0.

Could the settings for your LLC be affecting it at that specific frequency?

It feels strange to me that my chip doesn’t work well above 4.6Ghz. I’m familiar with the lottery, but this seems low compared to its capabilities.

I don’t understand. I’m not the right person for this. I haven’t touched a chip since that 4770k, which used a different setup. Some of you here are still familiar. What I can say is you need to push something really hard to test your overclock, and even then there might be problems. I could finish a 1-hour prime95 stress test at 4.2, but it would still cause occasional weird behavior on me.

It's really annoying. Some stores charge extra for protest chips, and if every processor could handle 4.5, Intel would market it as a 4.5 model.
