HI, welcome to the forum! I’m a new member. I have a Ryzen 7 2700 X, an RTX 3080 FTW3 with 16GB RAM at 3000MHz, a TUF Gaming B450 Plus motherboard. When playing games like Fortnite, PUBG, or Destiny, my GPU usage stays low—around 18%, while my CPU is at about 45%. My FPS in Fortnite ranges from 60 to 130 on low settings, similar to my friends who have less powerful setups and achieve around 160 FPS. Is this normal? What should I do? Thanks!

Resolution and game settings are what you're using. Your monitor refresh rate is currently set accordingly.

You're heavily relying on the CPU, 2700X feels too sluggish for an RTX 3080 at 1080p. Many users report similar issues—slow CPU or RAM combined with 1080p rendering. Even higher resolutions like 5600x likely won<|pad|>'s limits on the 3080, making 5800X3D the better option if you want full GPU utilization. The 3080 struggles significantly in 1080p with weak CPUs, outperforming the RX 6800 XT. Also, the system manager doesn't display accurate hardware stats; use MSI Afterburner for real-time monitoring via its OSD.

The motherboard BIOS update could boost performance slightly, but the gains are minimal. I confirm that a 2700 MHz clock speed is insufficient for a 3080 graphics card, and running at full CPU utilization is uncommon. Just because it doesn’t reach 100% usage doesn’t mean it isn’t limiting the GPU. Why? Because games typically require only 2 to 6 CPU cores, depending on the engine. Even with an 8-core processor, the CPU usage will never reach full capacity. There’s a lot to explore about CPU performance in games, but the key takeaway is that 2700 MHz simply can’t match the GPU’s demands. I won’t suggest purchasing a 3080 for 1080p not because it’s too powerful, but because its performance drops significantly in 1080p and 1440p compared to 4K, especially when paired with a slower CPU.

Focus on optimizing your setup for higher FPS. Invest in a high-refresh-rate monitor (like 144Hz or higher) and ensure your graphics card supports the latest drivers. Keep your GPU updated, use a stable power supply, and consider a gaming chair for comfort during long sessions.

After installing your new CPU, you generally don't need to update your motherboard unless it has specific compatibility requirements. Check the manufacturer's guidelines for details.

Tag me or quote this, otherwise I wouldn't know if you replied. Make sure the motherboard BIOS is updated first before changing the CPU—B450 doesn't support Ryzen 5000 natively. Let's check how the 5800X3D performs, as the CPU is crucial for smooth 1080p and competitive gaming.
