I bought and set up a new motherboard (Asus Q87M-E/CSM) to swap out my old one (Asus Z97-e/USB 3.1), which I thought might be about to stop working because of performance problems. It was cheaper than replacing the CPU or moving to a new system, so it was the simplest choice. My issues with stability seem resolved—previously the computer would crash at P95 or BSOD before the 25-30 minute mark, but now it runs smoothly for hours. After confirming the problem was likely the motherboard, I tried overclocking to reach at least the original 4.4 MHz. Unfortunately, the Q87 doesn’t support overclocking beyond stock speeds, or I might be misunderstanding the settings. There’s no manual mode for CPU core multiplier like in my old BIOS; setting it to sync all cores lets me try a higher multiplier (like 44), but it only goes up to that point. At 44 MHz the display shows “Target turbo speed: 4400MHz,” and lowering it to 40 or below switches to “Target CPU speed: 4000MHz.” Disabling turbo mode in power settings and trying a higher core multiplier again locks it at 44 and turns turbo back on. No other options seem clear, so I’m considering reaching out before making further changes. Thanks ahead!
You can increase the clock speed on the Q87, but that's the issue.
Yes, that's it. Only Z87 and Z97 support overclocking. Other chipsets aren't allowed.
