Hi, you're looking to refresh your system components while keeping your Windows setup. The reactivation code from Windows 8 should still work if you're using the same product key, even after upgrading to Windows 10. Just make sure your hardware matches what's supported by the new OS. If you switch to a different drive, you might need to reinstall or reactivate your license depending on the requirements.

Using the same drive usually means you won’t need to re-enter a key. I transferred an HDD between systems and it functioned perfectly—even with different hardware configurations.

Did the system run Windows 10 on that storage device?

Upgrading from Windows 7/8.1 to Windows 10 may link it to your motherboard or CPU. Changing either will cause the system to treat it as a different machine and won’t activate properly. You’ll need to reinstall the original Windows version, activate it, and then go through the upgrade again for Windows 10. It’s strange how Microsoft handled this, but once you switch to 10—whether retail or not—the license becomes tied to the original hardware it was installed on. Your Windows 7/8.1 license will stay valid, but it won’t work with Windows 10 unless you reinstall it.

You should perform a clean install of Windows on your new system. The license you had for Windows 8 was meant to be upgraded, so using it directly from Windows 8 won’t work until you upgrade to Windows 8.1. Once you upgrade to Windows 10, the license should function correctly.

You'll likely need to go through the entire free upgrade again so Windows 10 can activate. After installing the new hardware, you'll have to install a genuine copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 and complete the upgrade process once more.

Yes, that's correct. Install the new hardware, connect it via the Windows USB with 8 slots, and then upgrade to version 10.
