This approach worked before; the games needed the CD inserted into the DVD drive, and loading from there was necessary. If the CD isn't present, they wouldn't start. I'm planning to give it a shot.

The VM won't function properly due to insufficient GPU resources for demanding graphics-intensive games. Please share any alternative VM suggestions if you have them.

You can still access the CD in standard file format. Apply the compatibility method on the executable within the CD files. Or use the executable that launches the disk from Windows. Regardless, if you install the game in compatibility mode, you might not need to adjust the run file separately.

You can extract the dvd into an .iso file and then set it up as a virtual CD drive. Many games should function this way on Windows 10. For virtualization, you can route through GPU to VMs. If you're aiming for a Windows XP gaming setup, you'll need a different machine. There are plenty of older Core 2 systems available at very low costs, even with powerful GPUs that run on XP. It's pretty straightforward to locate a quad-core Core 2 + 8800GT for under $60.
