Legion Y530L experiences shutdowns or freezes when connected to a power source.
I’ve experienced issues with my Lenovo Legion Y530 for several months. When plugged in, it shuts off abruptly or after a short time. After turning it off, I can’t power it back on while it’s still connected to power. It usually works fine when using the battery, but when I connect an external monitor, the screen goes blank while the monitor stays on. The laptop’s backlight stays active even after it powers off. I’ve tried draining the battery, changing connection points, reinstalling drivers and Windows, but nothing resolves the problem. A video of the issue (without any device attached) is available. I notice numlock remains active, is there any chance it's just the screen turning off? Please review your advanced power options. Try pressing FN to wake the screen if needed. Are you using any remote desktop tools such as TeamViewer? Also, confirm you have the correct charger installed. Avoid using a notebook charger—it can cause issues. First connect only the mains side, then attach the notebook side. If the charger fails, your device may shut down immediately, and improper inrush could lead to problems later. It seems the monitor is likely being turned off rather than powered on.
I meant to clarify what the adapter refers to in that sentence. Also, does this occur even if nothing is connected at all? I’d like to try using the Spotify app from the Windows Store, play a track, connect headphones, put them on, and then lock the machine. If the sound stays on, you can proceed. After that, sign in again and connect via power. What happened? I want to confirm it’s not just cutting off the screen power, which would keep the backlight on.
I refer to adapter as the laptop's power source. I also tried what you suggested. I locked the laptop using Win + L. Music kept playing. I used the Windows version of iTunes. My internet was slow and I couldn't download Spotify at all—I'm certain it wasn't just the screen shutting down, as I mentioned earlier. I have both my laptop display and an external monitor. While gaming, I usually show my laptop stats on the monitor and play on the external one. When this happens (sometimes after a while while gaming), my laptop screen turns off and the external monitor freezes. All audio stops—game and Discord. At that moment I usually turn off the laptop (pressing power button) and then attempt to restart it. It doesn't even display a boot logo anymore. After that, I have to turn it off again, unplug the power, and then restart using battery power. Even when I connect the power back in, it's risky—whether the issue happens or not. About 90% of the time the problem appears right away or after a short period.
We needed to confirm everything. Since these are completely different scenarios needing unique solutions, could you check the temperatures? You mentioned wanting data from the secondary monitor (even if it's just a laptop screen). Is the device getting too hot? Can you try another adapter? Make sure the voltage matches exactly! It could be that the older adapter isn’t providing enough power, causing it to shut down due to overcurrent protection.
The temperatures have changed recently. Previously, the CPU stayed around 95°C and the GPU around 70-75°C, but now both are reaching about 90°C. I can't find another adapter, so I'll have to purchase a new one, which is a bit costly for me at the moment.
I have the same problem with my y530. The screen turns black when it's plugged in, but it happens unpredictably—sometimes instantly, sometimes after a while. The keyboard lights and fans are still working, but the whole system freezes. I used it for ten months without issues, but in the past two months it started again. I replaced the AC adapter, but it didn’t work. It seems like a hardware or electronic issue on the motherboard, as it also occurs when I open the BIOS. I tried removing the battery, RAM, HD storage, but nothing helped. Have you found a solution? My device stopped working just after the warranty ended, so I couldn’t return it to Lenovo. I don’t trust anyone in my area to fix it properly—they usually lack the expertise or are just scams.
No one found a solution to this problem. It seems strange since I'm experiencing the same issue, but the laptop freezes and shuts down completely. It only charges when it's off, and it takes a long time—about 8 hours for about 70% charge. I've tried using different batteries and chargers, but it didn't work. It probably relates to the motherboard or charging circuits. I've tested various Windows and Linux versions, updated firmware and drivers, but nothing helped.
I'm facing the same problems again... I've already tried replacing the RAM, but it didn't help. Even with unplugged power, it's still not working. Maybe the issue is on the mainboard—I'm considering looking at a different laptop model, like a Legion 5, instead of trying to fix the mainboard.
