Latest GPU added, performance varies occasionally.
I just bought a Zotac gtx 1080 mini off of ebay and installed it in a HP pavilion ( https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05496611 ) link to computer specs. I bought a thermaltake 600w 80+ white UATX PSU to run it and it didn't boot, turned it off reseated it and after a few tries it worked. I have it running on a riser just sitting on the outside of the case because the 24 pin doesn't allow for the GPU to seat all the way. My problem is that no matter what I do it will work every now and then and the rest of the time it wont. When I boot it will load windows, sometimes freezes at the home screen, sometimes freezes on the main page, other times I can get into task manager and stuff before it freezes, not BSOD just freezes. I have tried reseating it tens of times, new drivers, old drivers, no drivers. I have gotten a pink screen of death and white and am just at a loss. New riser is on the way but I don't think that is the issue seeing as every so often I can get it booted and totally stable until I shut it off and it won't start properly again. I'm open to any ideas at this point because I can't get a new motherboard/cpu until the summer. also it works fine in safe mode
Hey there! I think the card might be in trouble. Checking the device manager for a Code 43 could help confirm this. It could mean the seller had a faulty card or something went wrong during shipping. The riser might also be causing issues with the signal. A good idea would be to ask a friend who has a tower to swap their 1080mini and see if they notice the same problem.
Received the latest riser today and everything functions perfectly. I thought it might fail but was ready for the card to be dead. I also replaced the power supply from the 600W 80+white thermaltake unit with a used cooler master 800W 80+gold unit that I found for just 50 cents at a yard sale. I’ll see if that change caused any issues later, but I’m confident the card is fine—it was probably just a faulty riser.
