Laser printer toner cartridges.
Laser printer toner cartridges.
I recently purchased a Brother HL-L3230CDW printer to swap in for my old Dell 1320c. While attempting to print a digital photo for colour testing, I encountered an 'Insufficient Memory' error on an A4 sheet instead of the intended image. Unlike the Dell model which handled it with 64MB of memory and no issues, the Brother model with 256MB still displayed the same problem. Eventually, it became clear the issue lay within the Brother software itself. After uninstalling all drivers and software, using just the printer driver resolved the matter immediately.
I have two questions for helpers. First, if I rely solely on the printer driver without the Status Monitor console, will the printer still be able to track toner usage? Second, when I mentioned this with Brother Technical Support, did they suggest any alternative solutions, such as installing the 'Full' software package, to enable photo printing?
The surprising outcome was that using the 'Full' package gave me two print resolutions—Normal and Fine 2400 dpi—and also offered a 'Best' option, whereas the original driver only provided Normal, Fine, and Best. Thanks.
I would consider using only the printer driver for a while.

According to the Reference Guide, page 8 shows the printer indicating remaining toner. Accuracy is not guaranteed and might be better than what comes from the "Full" software. I’m unsure.
Take your time to work with it and learn more about the printer. Also refer to page 11.
Make sure to read the Reference Guide and Online User Guide carefully, paying attention to all warnings and notes.

According to the Reference Guide, page 8 indicates that the printer itself displays some information about remaining toner. The accuracy is not guaranteed and might be better than what comes from the "Full" software. I’m unsure.
Take your time to familiarize yourself with the printer. Also review page 11.
Carefully read the Reference Guide and Online User Guide, noting all warnings and notes.
Maintain a log of printer usage—including pages, toner levels, updates (firmware, drivers, apps)—in a convenient folder for future reference.
Keep in mind that the toner cartridge you have might be an introductory one and could run out sooner than expected.
Begin now to build a record of your printer’s behavior—it will be useful later.
Ralston 18, thank you for your response. The correct printer is indeed the 3230 model, which offers duplex printing unlike the 3210. The page you mentioned refers to the touchscreen interface (available on both 3230 and 3270 models; I have the control panel from the guide). After turning on the printer and adjusting the settings in the Control Panel, I found a setting that displays the toner levels in a bar graph, indicating how much of each toner is used. It’s a bit tricky, but this basic feature should suffice for now. Your guidance was very helpful. I reviewed the guide thoroughly before purchasing, though it didn’t go into such detailed explanations. They seem to assume you’ll use the 'Full' software package for all features. Yes, the toner cartridges are not the full size, which is common now, and I only changed them once in my Dell printer, which has been in use for 13-14 years. I also have a separate inkjet for photo printing. Thank you again for your assistance.
