Hi there, I'm working on a 1U server chassis and need advice on finding suitable non-server motherboards. You mentioned you're just starting with server design and are struggling mainly with the I/O shield cut-out. The current setup uses a height of 44.7mm (or 6.2mm above standoffs) plus the top of the chassis sides, which is 10.16mm high. Could anyone suggest alternatives that would fit this space? Thanks!

Choosing a 1U chassis with a separate non-server motherboard can simplify setup and organization. This setup may also make it easier for mods to focus on build planning or server configurations.

I'm helping someone who needs a compact 1U case. They want flexibility to install a desktop motherboard if they can't find a server board that fits their budget. I thought standard Xx99 or Bx50 slots would work, but realized server boards have tighter I/O shields—about 11mm smaller—so it might not fit.

Which boards were you examining? If they meet ATX standards, they should be consistent.

I wouldn't suggest it unless you're aware of the technical constraints. For starting a 1U or 2U build, begin with barebone or chassis kits: https://www.asrockrack.com/general/produ...p#Barebone and https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/chassis. Remember each chassis is limited to one motherboard from the same maker. You might still use the same board in both 1U and 2U setups, though the drive layout could vary. If you try fitting a desktop ATX board into a 1U case, it's likely to fail since the cooler won't fit properly. Check the chassis diagrams to see which boards are compatible and note any adjustments made.
