I work on productivity tasks using a MacMini, and intense gaming on an Xbox Series X (a lucky situation). I started from PC with a Radeon 5700XT that performed well for games at 1440p. The Xbox excels in FPS and larger titles, while the Mac handles older enhanced D&D games from Beamdog. I’ve noticed I don’t enjoy modern isometric RPGs on the Xbox due to controller use. I purchased a laptop with a GTX 1650 expecting smooth performance, but it gets quite hot.
My preferred games include:
Pathfinder (original and updated)
Pillars of Eternity I & II
Grim Dawn
Remastered Diablo 2
Other related titles
Strategy Games
XCOM (and 2)
Civ VI
Homeworld remastered
Warhammer 40K Dawn of War II (and possibly 3)
Sudden Strike 4
Planet Coaster (maybe)
I’d like to play these at 1440p on a home monitor at full settings. On the go, I’m comfortable with 1080p. I’m considering a laptop so I can balance gaming and mobility. Heat management is important to me. I’m open to general CPU/GPU recommendations.
When choosing a laptop, consider the specifications needed for the most challenging game you’re interested in. Aim for one with similar performance, such as a recent 4th generation i5 processor and a GTX 980 graphics card. For games running at 1440p, this should comfortably meet the demands.
