Hi, I purchased a laptop from an online marketplace, but it turned out to be a scam. I bought the Alienware 17 R4 with GTX 1080, i7 7820HK and 32GB RAM, but received only this model: Alienware 17 R4 with i7 6700HQ, GTX 1060 and 16GB RAM. Yeah, my mistake, but now the laptop is functional, though the 60Hz display isn’t suitable for gaming. Back in the day I had a model with 240Hz, and now I’m back to 60Hz, which isn’t great.

I have solid FPS in games like "Rematch" or "Hunt Showdown," but I can’t overclock it to 90-120Hz. Everyone says they’ve done it using the Cru software, but when I pushed it to 80Hz+, I got black screens or artifacts, and I’m capped at 74Hz max without issues.

So, can anyone really overclock the Alienware 17 R4 to 120Hz? Is this notebook still okay in 2025?

Alienware 17 R4
GTX 1060
16GB RAM
GTX 1060
FULL HD display
SSD Samsung EVO 970 1TB

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
I see, my mistake. The laptop is fine, but the 60Hz display isn’t ideal for gaming. About a year ago I bought one with 240Hz, and now I’m back to 60Hz—it’s not great...
Return the item.
How can anyone ever overclock Alienware 17 R4 to 120Hz?
What is the SKU for your Alienware 14 R4? Check the bottom of the laptop to find it and share the model number so we can check what you have. You mentioned, everyone...
I’ve looked through all the forums and everyone says they overclocked their Alienware 17 R4 with "cru" software to 120Hz easily.
Please pass on the links so we can see what you read. I’m also assuming the panel might be limited to 60Hz, possibly because the seller used a generic panel or your model is the base version.
Is this notebook suitable for 2025?
I wouldn’t have bought something like this in 2025, so yes, it’s likely you could have found a better option.

Service tag: GM3PRC2
MFG YR 2016
Express service code: 36165013922
I purchased it for 330 dollars.
The seller informed me they would refund 188 dollars and sent the money to my account.
I accepted it, and the final price of this laptop is 142 dollars—possibly a good deal for this model.

The table indicates a SKU with a 120Hz display, which you don’t have, explaining your current 60Hz setting. Windows 10 will stop receiving support by the end of this year, and officially there is no Windows 11 support available.
