I'm trying to understand PCIe lane functionality. My CPU supports 24 lanes, but 4 are reserved for other functions, leaving 20 available. The graphics card uses x16 4.0 and the capture card uses x4 3.0. Are these interfaces separate or do they share the same lane? I also want to know how components interact with different PCIe versions if that's the case. Parts to consider: X570 Crosshair VIII Hero Mobo RTX 3080, Elgato 4k60, any 4.0/3.0 M.2 slots. Your CPU provides four dedicated lanes for NVMe storage, four for the chipset, and sixteen for the GPU. The capture card will take lanes from the chipset, not the CPU. Adding an NVMe drive won’t affect the available sixteen lanes for your GPU.
Same lanes are used. The GPU moves to x8 due to the capture card, details explained later. They operate at the lowest available PCIe version between the slot and the device. All slots are 4.0, meaning a 4.0 device (such as the RTX 3080 or M.2) will run at 4.0. Otherwise, it switches to PCIe 3.0. The relevant PCIe mode would be: x8 for the graphics card, x8 for the capture card (though the Elgato 4K60 Pro uses only 4 lanes), and the M.2 can support up to PCIe Gen 4.0 at x4. I’m not sure if you can install the graphics in the top slot, run it at x16, bypass PCIe x16_2 and use PCIe x16_3 at x4—that would balance everything well. PCIE4.0 and 3.0 define the standard, lanes remain consistent. There are 20 lanes available, which can operate on either PCIe 4.0 or 3.0. Your CPU provides 20 free lanes; you can allocate 16 for the GPU and 4 for NVME or a capture card. If you keep your GPU in the x16 slot, connect the capture card via the chipset lane—refer to the manual for slot details. Note: The GPU is placed in the x16 slot, and the capture card goes into the corresponding M.2 slot connected to M.2_1 to utilize the 4 CPU lanes.
